Our People

Challenge Trust believes that good people are our greatest resource. As an organisation we understand the critical need to select, train, retain and develop our people. We know that for our clients to reach their full potential, they need to be supported by people who are achieving their full potential.

Our staff training programme is designed to increase achieve this by focussing on the following areas:

Promoting Recovery: This is viewed as the primary role for everyone involved with the organisation. All staff are trained to develop attitudes, knowledge and skills that are used when working alongside clients on their recovery journey.

Rehabilitation: Challenge Trust has recently recruited a Clinical Director to assist us in understanding and delivering “first class” services to our clients. Psychiatric rehabilitation has provided a framework for staff to incorporate in their daily work with clients and their communication with clinical teams.

Coaching and Supervision: A strong performance culture ensures that Team Leaders “coach” rather than “supervise” employees in relation to their day-to-day work. Challenge Trust encourages all its employees to take a leadership role.

Training: All staff are qualified to meet the needs of their role and they undertake a 63 day core training programme. There is also additional mandatory training for staff dealing with special needs groups.

National Certificate in Mental Health: Challenge Trust has commenced the accreditation process to become licensed to deliver the unit standards for the National Certificate in Mental Health. Internal training standards currently exceed the requirements for this qualification. Once accreditation for the Certificate is achieved, work towards accreditation, as a provider of the Diploma, will commence.

Skills Assessment: Challenge Trust offers a rigorous skills-based assessment process. Staff remuneration increases are based upon performance assessment against skills required for the level of excellence Challenge Trust expects.

Cultural Awareness and Spirituality: Cultural awareness is central to the training programme and our service delivery model. Staff are encouraged to seek the involvement of our Maori Development Manager, our Pacific Manager and our Asian Manager to ensure that our services and staff are culturally aware and recognise the needs and differences of people from different cultures.

Treaty of Waitangi: Challenge Trust is committed to working within the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi. Staff receive Treaty of Waitangi training as part of the core training programme, and annual training is given to all employees.

Professional Practice: Challenge Trust aims to be a sector model in the application of professional practice. Professional behaviour, professional boundaries, ethical decision-making, ethical reasoning and reflective practices are an integral part of our training programme. They are highlighted strongly in staff induction and reflected in strong policy statements and high performance expectations placed on staff in this regard.
